German court rejects smoking bans

Germany’s top court has ruled against smoking bans in small bars and clubs.

The Federal Constitutional Court upheld complaints against the bans in the city-state of Berlin and Baden-Wuerttemberg, in south-west Germany.

The two states are among 12 that introduced such bans at the start of the year. The court says they must now review their anti-smoking laws.

Smoking will now be allowed in one-room bars and clubs smaller than 75 sq m (807 sq ft), where no food is served.

The court gave Berlin and Baden-Wuerttemberg until the extremity of 2009 to draft new anti-smoking (exactly quit smoking - try break off smoking patch) legislation.

English take Welsh nurse degrees

Would-be nurses from England are doing their degrees in Wales because they automatically get bursaries of 6,372.

For student nurses on degree catamenia in England the National Health Service bursaries are means tested.

The number of English students applying for nursing degrees in Wales has other than trebled since 2003, Nursing Standard newspaper reported.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) wants the restraint to equalise the system from one extremity to the other of the UK.

The same principle applies for English students going to Scotland or Northern Ireland nevertheless fewer have been doing so.

Missing DNA chunks tied to schizophrenia risk (AP)

NEW YORK - Two huge international studies show that people who lack certain chunks of DNA run a dramatically higher risk of getting schizophrenia, a finding that could remedy open new doors to understanding and diagnosing the disease.

These deletions are exquisite, each found in less than 1 percent of schizophrenia patients. But each one boosts the risk of disease by as much as 15-fold, by one estimate.

Scientists before-mentioned studying such abnormalities may help them find new medications by shedding trifling on what causes the sickness.

New Prostate Cancer Drug Shows Promise (American Cancer Society)

Promising–yet preliminary–results from any early clinical heartache show that the experimental drug abiraterone can significantly reduce the size of prostate cancer tumors in men who haven’t responded to other therapies.

Researchers from the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and the Institute of Cancer Research in the United Kingdom recruited 21 men with late-stage prostate cancer who were no longer responding to hormone therapy and prescribed a once-a-day regimen of the pill abiraterone.

Alzheimer’s drug benefit persists over 18 months: study (Reuters)

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A deaden with narcotics for Alzheimer's disease made by Medivation Inc called Dimebon kept symptoms at bay for 18 months, U.S. researchers said on Wednesday.

No charges over C. diff outbreak

No-one is to face charges in connection with an outbreak of Clostridium difficile which left 90 people dead.

The deaths occurred at the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust in Kent between April 2004 and September 2006.

A Healthcare Commission record into the deaths highlighted serious lapses in hygiene, and Health Secretary Alan Johnson called the deaths “scandalous”.

But Kent Police and the Health and Safety Executive ruled out charges following an investigation.

New Alzheimer’s drug could slow mental decline: research (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) - Scientists in Britain have developed a drug which could represent a major breakthrough in treatment on the side of people with Alzheimer's disease, they said Wednesday.

The drug, Rember, targets the build-up of tau protein tangles which form inside the brain nerve cells of people with Alzheimer's.
